WHERE IT ALL STARTED

Tyson Fury also known as the ‘Gypsy King’ was bought up in the Wythanshawe area of Manchester, England, and gets the gypsy name from being born in a family of Irish travellers also known as gypsies.

Coming from a family with a history of boxing and the fighting associated with the gypsy tradition, Tyson was destined to become a boxer with strong influences from his father John Fury and trainer Peter Fury who were once professional Heavyweight boxers and bare knuckle fighters in the gypsy world.

THE JOURNEY

He started his career by representing England and Ireland at international level as an amateur boxer. He attended the Holy family boxing club in Belfast and Smithboro club in Republic of Ireland competing against International teams and came out winning all his fights including a win by knockout.

But he was hungry for more, Fury went on to represent the Jimmy Egan’s academy at the senior national level in 2006 and then was nominted to represent England and won EU Junior Championship in May 2007.

At the age of just 20, Tyson Fury became national champion (ABA) 2008 and later turned pro that year.

December 2008, Tyson made his professional debut beating Hungarian fighter Bela Gyongyosi in just round one by TKO. Tyson went on to sign six more fights in 2009 coming out victorious in all fights with an impressive win within 4 rounds all by knockout.

Tyson Fury was certainly making noise in the boxing world, with more fights and more wins in 2009 and 2010, Fury was emerging as a future prospect in the heavyweight division. It was only a matter of time before he would get his title shot.

Before a title shot Tyson had to see off the likes of Steve Cunningham, the competition was getting tough and Fury was caught with a left going down in the second round but responded well in the seventh knocking out Cunningham.

Rival contender Dereck Chisora was Fury’s next opponent who also had an unbeaten record. Tyson dominated the fight which caused Chisora’s corner to throw in the towel. Similarly, Fury beat Christian Hammer in his next match up with and a title shot was well in sight.

November 2015, Tyson Fury shocked the boxing world by becoming the new heavyweight champion of the world after beating Wladimir Klitschko in a 12 round bout. The rematch will take place on 29 October 2016 at the Manchester Arena.
